The data supplied in this database is collected by the Illinois Health and Hospital Association. The hospital discharge data provide uniform information on virtually all hospitalizations within the state§. This database is modified from the Community Health Information System (CHIS), a database originally developed by the Illinois Hospital Association. It contains some demographic characteristics of hospitalized patients as well as principal conditions associated with hospitalization, major medical procedures, hospitalization outcomes and charges.

§Note: The hospital discharges accounted for in this query system consist of those reported by IHA member hospitals. They do not include a handful of Illinois hospitals that are not IHA members. From 1994-2014, these hospitals were mostly located in the Cook County area, and they accounted for approximately 3 percent of the statewide annual volume of hospital discharges and about 7 percent of Cook County’s volume. In 2015, a few hospitals in southern Illinois became non-members. The state-wide non-member volume changed from approximately 3 percent to 4 percent, and Cook County remained unchanged (7 percent). NOTE: For the following southern Illinois counties: Hamilton, Jefferson, Marion, and Washington, facilities that are not IHA members account for more than 50 percent of the county volumes in 2015. Reports focusing on these counties should be interpreted cautiously.

The diagnosis information may be subject to some variations in medical practice and diagnostic labeling.

The data available for querying in this reporting system is a subset of the entire hospital discharge database. Eight data elements are utilized in this system. The data is aggregated in groups to protect record confidentiality and facilitate querying (for example, individuals age "53 years old" will be in the age grouping of "45-54" years old; while hospitalizations that occurred in " February 1996" will be located in the time period of "1996 - Quarter 1".) A brief description of each of the hospital discharge data elements that can be queried in this system is listed below:
  • Age – Provides specific age range groupings (i.e. age "1-4") for the patients contained in the database. The age is based upon the patient age on the date that the hospital discharge occurred.

  • Gender – Identifies the gender of patients using categories of “male,” “female” or “unknown."

  • Cause of Hospitalization – Describes the primary reason for hospitalization utilizing diagnosis groupings. These groupings are based upon the World Health Organization, 9th Revision, International Classification of Diseases (ICD-9), but also in a few cases on the Diagnosis Related Groups (DRGs).

  • Length of Stay – Identifies the length of time that patients were hospitalized (including outlier cases in which the severity of the condition warrants hospitalization stay outside the average length of stay).

  • Hospital Charges – Identifies the hospital charges incurred during hospitalization. Reflects hospital billing only and not necessarily actual consumer payment.

  • Payor – Identifies the primary source of expected payment for the hospitalization charges.

  • Time Period – Denotes the time frame (by quarter) of when the hospital discharge occurred. NOTE: In order to query data for an entire year, all four quarters for that year need to be selected.

  • County of Residence – Identifies the specific county that the patient resided in at the time of hospitalization. NOTE: "Select ALL" is the default category for this data element. To submit a query for the entire state of Illinois, select every option except the last one in the scroll box (i.e., "Out of Illinois").
