State announces efforts to end health disparities among Asian Americans and Pacific IslandersCHICAGO, Ill. – Dr. Eric E. Whitaker, state public health director, today talked about health disparities among Asian Americans and the status of a report that included recommendations for the reducing the identified disparities. The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) awarded a $50,000 grant to the Asian Health Coalition to work in conjunction with researchers, policy advocates, and community leaders from selected educational and community based organizations, to produce a written report about the disparities Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in Illinois experience when accessing health services. “Health disparities refer to gaps in the quality of health and health care across racial and ethnic groups,” said Dr. Whitaker. “These gaps can be due to population-specific differences relating to disease, health outcomes, or access to health care. This report is important because it focuses on a specific population of people, so we can identify the problem and come up with solutions.” The grant was awarded through IDPH's Center for Minority Health Services which provides information and technical assistance regarding the health care needs of minority populations. The Center for Minority Health Services develops, maintains and enhances health care services in minority communities. The Center for Minority Health Services works with state and local entities to heighten awareness of minority health issues and services across the state. “We're pleased to work again with the Illinois Department of Public Health and thank Dr. Whitaker for his support with this task,” said Hong Liu, Executive Director of the Asian Health Coalition.“The Asian Health Coalition will also develop a bilingual media campaign and will work with Chinese speaking newspapers to reach Chicago's Armor Square residents with messages to promote healthy lifestyles.” For more information on minority health services offered through the Illinois Department of Public Health log on to www.idph.state.il.us or call the Center for Minority Health Services at 217-785-4311. |
