Illinois Lead Poisoning Elimination Advisory Council
The mission of the Illinois Lead Poisoning Elimination Advisory Council is to develop and implement a comprehensive statewide “healthy homes" strategic plan and foster creative partnerships for primary prevention, intervention and outreach.
The nine major goals of the council are:
- To improve awareness of childhood lead poisoning among parents, health care providers, the housing industry, elected officials and opinion leaders.
- To make lead-safe housing a priority in all areas of the state.
- To provide a mechanism to allow the public to make lead-safe housing choices.
- To be more aggressive in interventions against unsafe housing.
- To improve regulatory tools and compliance efforts against housing containing lead.
- To simplify and improve screening practices for at-risk children.
- To focus screening efforts on areas of highest concern.
- To identify children in rural areas at risk for lead poisoning.
- To provide better data analysis and an effective framework for the evaluation of long-term and short-term outcomes for the implementation of this strategic plan.
The council is divided into subcommittees who identify or address goals and objectives related to the elimination of childhood lead poisoning and healthy homes initiatives. The subcommittees are:
- Education Awareness
- Primary Prevention/Screening
- Resource & Regulations
- Evaluation
- Healthy Homes Identification & Intervention
The Program continues to recruit and build capacity and competency among members of its Advisory Council. The current stakeholders include:
- Physicians
- Nurses
- Health Educators
- Nutritionists
- Demographer
- Environmental Scientists
- Epidemiologists
- Allied Health Professionals
- University Professors
