The Illinois Department of Public Health's Division of Environmental Health works to reduce the incidence of disease and injury related to environmental factors that fall within five major areas of responsibility:
Successfully executing these responsibilities helps ensure that Illinois' many environmental health laws and regulations accomplish their intended objective of protecting the health and safety of the state's citizens with regard to environmental factors. The specific programs administered by the Division cover a number of general topical categories. There are those that protect the health of persons who live in mobile home parks, migrant labor camps and manufactured housing. Others assure that recreational areas such as youth camps and campgrounds, swimming facilities are clean and safe. The Division helps ensure the safety of private and non-community water supplies by licensing those who construct wells and install pumps. People involved in private sewage disposal system construction and pumping of septic systems are also licensed to help ensure that they are competent and use approved materials and methods. Asbestos removal in schools and other commercial and public buildings, lead abatement and pest control are regulated. The Division surveys Illinois for mosquitoes and other carriers of disease and recommends ways to control or eliminate them.
